ACT Test Preparation: The Stepwise Success System™

At A+ Tutoring Test Preparation of Cincinnati, we recognize that while many Midwest parents prefer the straightforward nature of ACT test prep over the “trickiness” of preparing for the SAT. However, both tests share a common core: critical thinking.

Success on test day for the ACT administration isn’t about stumbling upon a 36; it’s about a systematic approach to breaking down complex problems into manageable parts.

Our program move beyond “question-oriented” practice. Instead, we utilize the Stepwise Success System™—a proven, result-oriented method designed to channel and transform the fundamental skills students are often lacking.

Our Universal Stepwise Approach

For Reading, Science, and English, we teach students to navigate the test using a 6-step logical sequence:

  1. Underlining: We start by isolating “puzzle pieces” or context ideas in the question itself to prevent misreading.

  2. Classifying: Recognizing categories of questions (e.g., Main Idea vs. Inferential) tells the student exactly where and how to look for the answer.

  3. Going to the Right “Part”: We go to the logical places in the passage or charts to arrange the evidence.

  4. Underlining: Now we target the area we need for our prediction.  What are the actual pieces we will need to make our prediction?
  5. Predicting: Before looking at the choices, students determine what the answer should look like.

  6. Correlating: We match the student’s prediction with the specific choice that reflects it.

The 5-Step Success System for ACT Math

Unlike the SAT’s puzzle-based math, the ACT requires a heavy mastery of formulas and school-based concepts. To help our students dominate this section, we utilize a specialized 5-step math protocol:

  • Step 1: Underlining. Identifying the variables and the “ask” of the problem.

  • Step 2: Relating. Students place numbers and “ones” where they logically belong to establish relationships between values.

  • Step 3: Simplifying and Factoring. Breaking down complex algebraic expressions into their simplest components.

  • Step 4: Using Operations. Properly combining equations and applying the order of operations to solve with precision.

  • Step 5: Substitution Strategies. We teach students when to use one of three types of substitutions (Algebraic, Picking Numbers, or Backsolving from answer choices) to find the most efficient path to the answer.

Subject-Specific Mastery

  • The English Test: We focus on the “grammar” fundamentals—usage, mechanics, and rhetorical skills—using classification to move through 75 questions in 45 minutes.  By giving our students all the tools a proficient college student would have after an introductory college grammar course.

  • The Reading Test: We specialize in the four core subsections—Prose Fiction, Social Studies, Humanities, and Natural Sciences—using our labelling method to track dialogue and complex ideas.

  • The Science Test (which is optional for many colleges): We demystify data interpretation. By classifying questions into Inferential Reasoning or Detecting Detail, students can confidently interpret graphs, tables, and conflicting hypotheses.

  • Writing (Optional): We provide a structured approach to the 30-minute free response, focusing on the rhetorical skills that two independent graders look for in a top-tier essay.
